I am writing a book on UK tidal islands and including a chapter on Mersea. Mersea is quite different from most of our tidal islands, being the largest, having by far the greatest population, but only being cut off for an hour or so and not every day.

I would be most interested to hear the views of Mersea residents as to how they view the island. Being tidal does it have the same island type community that you get in more remote islands, or is it little different to remote coastal villages like say Tollesbury? Do you see Mersea as an island or just a coastal town, or does being tidal make it different to both – perhaps more special?

Does the Strood give Mersea its identity or is it just an inconvenience? Would you like the road to be raised so that it is always passable, or do you look forward to rising sea levels when you will be cut off for longer periods?

If anyone would care to share some thoughts I would be most grateful as along with the history, geography etc, it would be good if I could include something on how Mersea’s residents view their island in my book.

Thank you.

(and by the way, if anyone is interested my first book – Essex Coast Walk - covers a walk the length of the Essex coast and includes a little about Mersea. It’s on sale at the Art Café)
