While recently trolling the internet using Mersea Island related search terms, I was staggered at the amount of text and photographic content relating the Strood. This iconic Mersea feature really seems to inspire a great deal of fascination in people. I guess the reasons behind this are varied and many, but with so few communities in the UK linked to the mainland by a true causeway, it really is something to be valued. So when the next round of debate about raising the height of the Stood to minimise our disconnection from the rest of Essex starts again, it may be worth considering how this could dent the mysticism and fascination that surrounds our Island.
