Traffic comes to a standstill in Gateshead due to blizzards
By Michael Pickard
SMOKE rises from a canal boat in a waterside scene that looks picture perfect for any Christmas card.
The boats were frozen together along the Leeds-Liverpool canal in central Lancashire as temperatures plummeted to sub-zero.
But winter also brought tragedy. A male walker who reached the 3,000ft peak of Y Garn in Snowdonia fell 500ft to his death off a cornice of overhanging snow on Saturday while descending with two girl students he met at the summit.
One woman swept away with him escaped and was rescued by a mountain guide who abseiled down.
On the roads, black ice caused an unsuspecting driver to crash into a ditch, while another vehicle overturned along the same stretch on Mersea Island near Colchester.
With bookmakers slashing the odds of a white Christmas, it will be cool for the big day. But first there will be warmer weather.
Forecasters predict a stream of tropical air could send the mercury up to about 57F (14C) by Wednesday.
