It is not yet known how many people are trapped in their vehicles.

Firefighters are monitoring the tide and waiting to carry out a snatch rescue should casualties be in danger.

The Marine Police are heading to the scene, along with police and ambulance teams. An RNLI lifeboat is on standby and will attend if a rescue becomes necessary.

This follows a similar incident last week when West Mersea Station Officer Jon Mussett condemned reckless motorists who put their lives in danger by taking a chance driving across this stretch of road at high tide.

He said it was a persistent problem for the emergency services, tying up a huge amount of valuable resources.
