Karl Hayler believes leading Ely to a promotion play-off in Eastern Counties One would be the perfect way to end his tenure as captain.

Club rules means he must stand down at the end of this season – his second in charge – and the side are currently fourth in the table.

Hayler and his men host Ipswich YM tomorrow on the back of a 20-13 success over Mersea Island last time out, when winger Kev Houghton got their only try and Jamie Russell kicked the crucial points.

"The top two will do what they do but, on a personal note, if we can finish in the top four and get into a play-off then that would be a nice way to end my captaincy," said Hayler (below).

"It would be a massive step for the club to progress in that way, and that’s where we want to be.

"Ipswich have come up this season, so we’re not quite sure what they’ll come with, and it should be an interesting game.

"We’re playing well and things are looking quite good at the moment."

Winless Mildenhall Eagles will need to find a sterling display from somewhere if they are to get a result at leaders Hadleigh.
