Dean James applied the finishing touches to Cantabrigian’s 27-18 win at Crusaders in Eastern Counties One to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.

After six minutes Warren Cowan gained good ground and Jon Perks was on hand for the second- phase drive to score from 10m, with Ali McCormick converting.

Crusaders replied with an unconverted try, but on 15 minutes, McCormick beat a couple of players to touch down under the posts and his conversion made it 14-5.

The hosts capitalised on some spilled possession to get their second unconverted try, and a penalty reduced the arrears to one point.

Cantabs continued to dominate after half time, and McCormick slotted a penalty from 25m to make it 17-13, and he was soon four out of four after another offside verdict against Crusaders.

Cantabs’ pack continued to dominate and after winning a scrum against the head, James touched down after the resulting drive.

McCormick’s conversion finished Cantabs’ scoring before Crusaders got a late unconverted try.

Jamie Russell kicked Ely to a 20-13 victory over Mersea Island in Eastern Counties One.

Winger Kev Houghton scored Ely’s try, and when Sam Benzie went off with an injury which required 11 stitches above his eye, hooker Russell took over the kicking duties.

Ely held a one-point lead with five minutes remaining, but after strong defence on the line, Russell landed two penalties to settle the nerves.

"The performance was a good one," said former captain Lee Coulson. "Mersea Island weren’t what we were expecting at all, they put up a hell of a fight.

"Their attacking defence was what did the damage to us as they were up in our faces."

Sawston’s search for their first win in Eastern Counties Two continues as they were beaten 55-0 at Swaffham.
