MARK Laws kicked Wisbech to an unlikely win at the weekend to keep their promotion bid on track.

It looked bleak at the break for Wisbech as they trailed their hosts, Mersea Island, 19-0 in an Eastern Counties Division One game and a big upset looked to be on the cards.

But Wisbech, inspired by the accurate place-kicking of scrum-half Laws, produced a rousing second-half rally to run out 23-19 winners and preserve their unbeaten record.

They are three points behind leaders Cantabrigians with a game in hand.

Laws added 13 points with the boot, converting tries by Joe Barfoot and James Napier and slotting three precious penalties.

PETERBOROUGH Lions had little trouble hanging on to top spot in Midlands Division Two East (South) at the weekend.

They entertained Northampton Old Scouts at Bretton Park and cantered to a 45-7 victory.

Three converted tries inside the opening 15 minutes - by Matty Amos, Gedis Marcisauskas and Mark Roussouw - knocked the stuffing out of a brave but outclassed Scouts side and the Lions dominated possession and territory from then on.

Further touchdowns were added by Chris Humphrey (2), Jaco Steenberg and Marius Andrijauskas. Steenberg kicked five of the seven conversions.

The only blot on Lions copybook was a red card for second row Stefan Arlow, who was dismissed by referee Steve Oliver along with the Old Scouts number eight after a bout of fisticuffs.

Up until the late sending off, Arlow was enjoying one of his best games for the Lions. Also prominent were Lithuanian internationals Marcisauskas and Andrijauskas and flying winger Rudi Van Der Merwe.

DEEPINGS chalked up their fifth straight win when taking the honours 18-7 at Brackley to move to third in the Midlands Division Three East (South) table.

It was another solid performance with tries coming from captain Dan Hainsworth and full-back Guy Cunningham. Fly-half Nick Dobie adding the additional points with the boot, including a magnificent drop -goal.

AFTER suffering two very heavy defeats in Midlands Division One East, Spalding restored some pride with a battling display at second-placed Kettering.

Spalding lost 29-25 but could, with a little more luck, so easily have nicked a remarkable win.

Boosted by the return of three of their RAF players from a tour to Australia, Spalding possessed more steel up front. Josh McNally, Richie Craig and Phil Taylor scored their tries and McNally was unlucky to have another ruled out for an adjudged forward pass following a superb break by Ed Duerden.

AFTER a much improved performance against Stoneygate, Thorney travelled to local rivals Westwood full of anticipation and were looking to notch up their first win of the season in Midlands Division Four East (South).

But they struggled to suppress the Westwood spirit and match the aggression of the home side at the breakdown and ended up losing 17-10.

Full-back Jamie Jenkins scored the Thorney try and went close to grabbing another when just failing to gather up his chip under the Westwood posts.

BOROUGH Under 18s scored five fabulous tries as they overcame Leighton Buzzard 27-17 in a league match at Fengate.

Conor Thorpe grabbed the first two - gathering up an Ali Masters grubber kick for one and then supporting a James Berry break for the other.

Berry also helped set up the third - scored by Zak McClure - and then Marcus Jones crossed in the corner after a series of crisp passes.

Finally Adam Kimber touched down after another bout of smart handling by backs and forwards alike.

TWO Peterborough Regional College (PRC) players have been selected for the South East squad to play in two national trial matches from which this season’s British Colleges squad will be selected.

Hooker Ollie Lake and full-back Vernon Horne will play in the games at Gloucester University on November 6 and 20 while their Peterborough team-mates Jordan Burgess (centre) and Chris Sansby (wing) have been named as reserves.

The South East squad was picked following East trials at Bury St Edmunds. Peterborough Regional College players that made it into the East squad were Lake, Horne, Sansby, Burgess, Kerrie McMuller, Mateusz Jackiewisz and Jacob White.

Peterborough Regional College coach Lewis Capes said: “The selectors informed me on the day that our boys were a great credit to PRC as they acted professionally throughout the trial process.”

PRC play Palmers College, Essex, in a British Colleges League game at Peterborough Rugby Club, Fengate, tomorrow (2pm kick-off).

IT was a super Sunday for the Peterborough Lions mini teams at a triangular tournament at Stamford.

The Under 7s and Under 8s both won all their games with Ben Sutton crossing for an amazing 14 tries for the Under 7s. He scored all eight in the 40-25 win over Sleaford.

Top try-scorer for the Under 8s with eight touchdowns was Jorja Matchwick.
