Colchester: Lorries' route raises traffic concerns
8:00am Friday 23rd September 2011
A BID is being made to temporarily route lorries going to Abberton Reservoir along a busy, residential road.
Essex and Suffolk Water, which is leading a £150 million expansion of the reservoir, is seeking permission to allow lorries, weighing up to 30 tonnes, access to the reservoir via Mersea Road.
The lorries will be carrying material needed to build the dam at the Broadmeadows end of the reservoir.
And the company says the work will be completely quicker and more efficiently if its lorries are allowed to use the Mersea Road access rather than the established one off the B1026 at Layer.
However, the application has raised concerns amongst residents who says the road is already dangerous due to the volume and speed of existing traffic.
And they say the lorries will only serve to aggravate an already hazardous route.
