Big weekend for Harwich and Dovercourt RFC
10:53am Friday 9th September 2011
HARWICH and Dovercourt RFC chairman Barry Male is looking forward to a big weekend.
They will be gracing the pitch at the home of English rugby in the national O2 touch finals day at Twickenham tomorrow.
Harwich had been running a summer Friday night Touch Rugby Festival at Low Road to encourage more people to join in and take up the sport.
It proved very successful and the club were selected to compete against 11 other sides from around the country following their video entries on a special Facebook page.
There is also the small matter of the visit of Mersea Island for the opening fixture of the Eastern Counties League division one season.
Male said: “It is a fantastic honour for the club to be invited to play at Twickenham.
“This is a great start for the season at Harwich; we are fully committed to our league campaign but the invite to play at the home of rugby is the icing on the cake.
“It’s a little bit difficult with both the first and second teams playing on Saturday.
“But we have a team of ten players, plus hangers on and supporters, going down.
“Their team is made up from those who played in our Friday evening touch rugby sessions, only two of the team are regular rugby players.
“And that was the point of the sessions, to bring people into the sport.
“They know how to look after people at Twickenham and I’m sure they will have a great day.”
And turning his attention back to the visit of Mersea Island, Male said: “Pre-season has gone really well.
“We’ve had two matches against a Colchester side and Woodbridge.
“We put in a good performance despite losing against a strong Colchester team and we beat Woodbridge.
“We are very confident about our prospects ahead of the start of the season."
