A COUPLE got stranded on Mersea causeway after they ignored tide warning signs.
The pair rang 999 after their car came to a stanstill on the Strood and started filling with water.
Firefighters and the West Mersea inshore lifeboat were called to the scene just before 1pm today after the couple said the water had risen to half a metre.
A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “We believe the car stopped midway over the Strood because of the water.
“One of the firefighters instructed the couple that the tide was receding and in 20 minutes it would be clear.
“It is believed they left the car and walked to the end of the causeway after they called us.
“Both of the people were free when we arrived on the scene.”
No one was injured in the incident.
