A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to build a £1million pavilion on Mersea[1] Island.
West Mersea Town Council has agreed to pursue funding for a building at the Glebe Recreation Ground. It is hoped work could be completed in the next two years if the money can be found. Parts of the existing pavilion, used by sports teams, date back to the Sixties and have fallen into a poor state. The new pavilion would include changing rooms and a bar and lounge area.
Town clerk Dave Tucker said: “We have had planning permission for a big, new pavilion to replace the old one for some time.
“It will cost up to £1million and we will be going for the money wherever we can.”
Part of the Glebe recreation ground where the pavilion stands was gifted to the council in 2004, as part of a legal agreement involving a housing development off East Road. The council had been hoping to build a two-storey replacement for the dilapidated pavilion. But last summer councillors were forced to shelve the plans due to the financial downturn.
Mr Tucker said repairs would still be carried out on the current pavilion, but the aim was to build a new one.
