Buxey_Cricket_GroundSunday 27th July - Crew, Guild members and supporters from the Mersea and Burnham Lifeboat stations met for a cricket match with a strange twist!

After a conversation between a couple of Mersea and Burnham Lifeboat crew at a recent Burnham Station event (beer may have been involved), the challenge was tabled for an inter station cricket match. The planning session that ensued resulted in the Buxey Sands being chosen as the venue!!!!

The Buxey Sands is an area that most yacht's people spend years trying to avoid, so the prospect of finding this submerged bank and waiting for the tide to recede and expose the pristine sands is a strange experience, but one not to be missed.

The cricket match rules, slightly modified from standard rules, called for a two innings match with Mersea winning the toss and batting first. After some heroic batting and fielding from both teams, Mersea were bowled out within the time limit for their innings. Burnham's strong batting eventually won them the day, and team captain 'Tricky' gracefully accepted the new trophy from umpire and match official Jeremy Dumas. Both teams and spectators agreed that it had been a fantastic day, and are already planning next years match.
