The romantic lure of Island life is alive and well just off the coast of Essex. Mersea Island, nestled between the river Blackwater and Colne estuaries is approximately nine miles south-east of Colchester, and is without doubt one of the county's best kept secrets.

The island is approximately five miles by two miles, and has a perimeter of twelve miles encompassing the town of West Mersea and the village of East Mersea. The name is a derivation of the Anglo Saxon word ‘Meresig’, which dates from the early 10th Century and means 'island of the pool'.
 
Mersea Island Causeway

Mersea Island's only link to the mainland is via the Strood causeway. The causeway is liable to flood during high tides, and extreme caution should be observed when attempting to enter or exit Mersea Island when the tide is due to cover the road.

Important Information
The tide heights and times indicated are estimated based on commercial tidal prediction charts!

The actual tide times and heights can be greatly effected by weather conditions such as wind direction and speed!

The tide time represents high water, and the causeway may be flooded up to two hours either side of high water!

And when on the island, be careful where you park especially on a rising tide!
