Mersea Island Portal

The romantic lure of Island life is alive and well just off the coast of Essex. Mersea Island, nestled between the river Blackwater and Colne estuaries is approximately nine miles south-east of Colchester, and is without doubt one of the county's best kept secrets.

The island is approximately five miles by two miles, and has a perimeter of twelve miles encompassing the town of West Mersea and the village of East Mersea. The name is a derivation of the Anglo Saxon word ‘Meresig’, which dates from the early 10th Century and means 'island of the pool'.

Father Christmas Float - 10th December 2007

The Father Christmas float will be touring the Island on the 10th December. Starting at the police station on East Road, and heading along the neighbouring avenues, so as to avoid the main roads.

The popular RNLI Christmas cards will be on sale at Game Estate Agents and Wyatts Chandlery.

Boxing Day 'Dip' - 26th December 2007

Last years Boxing Day 'Dip' was very successful, though arranged at the last minute. This year, it will be a bigger, and hopefully an even more successful event.

Participants can be sponsored, or pay a donation to the RNLI funds, and details will be available from Game Estate Agents in Yorick Road and Wyatts Chandlery Coast Road. Swimmers or dippers are invited to come along in fancy dress if they wish, and the event will take place on the beach between the Monkey Beach steps and the houseboats. The timing has to be a little different this year due to the tide, so that participants will enter the water at 11:30am on Boxing Day, and will be greeted by a hot drink when they emerge. Refreshments will also be available to spectators.

Lifeboat guild AGM - 17th April 2008

The AGM of the Mersea Island Lifeboat Guild will be held at the West Mersea Yacht Club at 7:30pm on Thursday 17th April. The meeting is open for anyone to attend, and we hope that many people who live, work or sail in the area will come along to find out more about this friendly and active group.
