Mersea Island Portal

The romantic lure of Island life is alive and well just off the coast of Essex. Mersea Island, nestled between the river Blackwater and Colne estuaries is approximately nine miles south-east of Colchester, and is without doubt one of the county's best kept secrets.

The island is approximately five miles by two miles, and has a perimeter of twelve miles encompassing the town of West Mersea and the village of East Mersea. The name is a derivation of the Anglo Saxon word ‘Meresig’, which dates from the early 10th Century and means 'island of the pool'.

Mersea Island Commerce

Mersea Island has a thriving business community made up of companies operating in many different sectors. Being an island there is an obvious connection to the sea, and Mersea has been a fishing community for hundreds of years. The tough leglisation on commercial fishing has resulted in a steady decline in the Mersea fishing fleet. The island also has a number of businesses that support water based leisure activities including marine engineers, chandlers, boat yards and sail makers.

Mersea has always been an important player in the oyster market bringing in the famed 'Mersea Native Oysters' and distributing to many restaurants. It is rumoured that if you eat an oyster in London, it is more than likely to come from Mersea.

Mersea is very much a summer tourist area and during peak months the population swells with many holiday makers and day visitors.
