Mersea Island Portal

The romantic lure of Island life is alive and well just off the coast of Essex. Mersea Island, nestled between the river Blackwater and Colne estuaries is approximately nine miles south-east of Colchester, and is without doubt one of the county's best kept secrets.

The island is approximately five miles by two miles, and has a perimeter of twelve miles encompassing the town of West Mersea and the village of East Mersea. The name is a derivation of the Anglo Saxon word ‘Meresig’, which dates from the early 10th Century and means 'island of the pool'.

News - Bradwell nuclear site Proposals

This meeting will be chaired by West Mersea Town Council Cllr Mayor Alan Mogridge in a private capacity, and
will include an expert panel including Professor Andrew Blowers OBE, who has a home here on Mersea, and was on the Committee for Radioactive Waste Management CORWM http://www.corwm.org.uk/content-274

The Council has been advised by HM Health & Safety Executive Nuclear Installations Inspectorate that contrary to the indications given to the public meeting Bradwell site has not submitted a safety case that justifies the underground storage of waste until 2016 as planned, and that the NII safety deadline of 2012 still remains. This infers that work has to commence now to remove this waste if the 2012 deadline is to be met. The problem identified by the site in making progress is caused by cutbacks in funding.
